What it removes
Particulate and free water, at the polishing end of the line. Stacked-disc elements give a large filter area in a short body, so the unit holds a fine rating without the pressure drop or the change-out frequency of a pleated cartridge. Cleanliness of ISO 4406 14/12/9 or better comes out of the unit, which is the band most hydraulic and lube circuits are specified to.
How it works
Oil passes through a stack of thin discs held in compression. The gap between the discs sets the removal rating, and because the gaps are distributed over a large area, the element keeps its flow at a much finer rating than a single-layer screen would allow. Free water coalesces on the disc surfaces and drops out, so the same element does both jobs. Cleaning is a stack take-apart and rinse rather than a cartridge purchase.
Where it is used
In-line polishing, and as the last stage before a machine that cannot tolerate particulate: a hydraulic station running far above its contamination limit is the case in point, where the oil was clean enough to reuse but not clean enough to run. Also used as the outlet stage on a vacuum purifier, where it protects the cleanliness the vacuum stage achieved.
Options and service
In-line or off-line mounting. Differential pressure indicator so the change-out is driven by measurement. The disc stack is re-usable, which on a high-flow circuit is the difference between a consumable line item and a one-off purchase.
Common questions
What cleanliness does it hold?
ISO 4406 14/12/9 or better, which is the band most hydraulic and lube circuits are specified to.
Why stacked discs instead of a pleated element?
A stack gives a large filter area inside a short housing, so fine filtration does not come with the pressure drop and change-out frequency of a pleated element.
Can it be used on its own?
Yes, as in-line polishing — but it is most often the last stage before a machine that cannot tolerate particulate.
