Fatty-acid-ester fire-resistant fluid held at 800 ppm — steel plant, north-east China
Chronic water ingress had emulsified the fluid year after year. After treatment, water content held at 800 ppm.
Challenge
Fatty-acid-ester fire-resistant fluid at a steel plant in north-east China took in water and emulsified year after year, with water content repeatedly over the operating limit. The fluid is chosen because it will not feed a fire near a furnace, not because it is easy to keep dry, and every year the choice was between an early charge replacement and running the system wet.
Solution
Nano ultra-clean screening purification equipment was run on the fluid in service, connected to the system rather than to a drained reservoir. Because the treatment happens at working temperature and under vacuum rather than by heating the fluid hard, the ester is dried without being pushed toward the hydrolysis that produces acid in the first place.
Outcome
Water content held at 800 ppm over the long term, which meets the production standard. The fluid stayed in service because the water was controlled, not because it was replaced often enough -- and on a fire-resistant charge, that is the difference between a maintenance line item and a capital one.
